Acute cholecystitis
Acute cholecystitis refers to the inflammation of the gallbladder, typically triggered by a gallstone obstructing the cystic duct. Gallstones are small, stone-like formations, primarily composed of cholesterol, that develop in the gallbladder. The cystic duct serves as the primary passage for the gallbladder. Gallstones are quite prevalent, impacting over 1 in 10 adults in the UK. While they often remain asymptomatic, they can sometimes lead to painful episodes known as biliary colic or result in acute cholecystitis.
When to seek medical help
If you experience sudden and intense abdominal pain, especially if it persists for more than a few hours or is accompanied by symptoms like jaundice or a high temperature, seek medical attention from a GP without delay. If you can't reach your GP right away, consider contacting your local out-of-hours service or call NHS 111 for guidance. Timely diagnosis of acute cholecystitis is crucial, as failing to treat it quickly may lead to serious complications.
