About Mr Ramesh Thurairaja

Mr Ramesh Thurairaja is a distinguished consultant urological surgeon at Cleveland Clinic London Hospital and Cleveland Clinic Moorgate Outpatient Centre, specialising in urological cancers and reconstructive surgery. He completed advanced fellowships at two leading institutions: the Inselspital in Bern, Switzerland, where he trained under Professor Urs Studer in prostate and bladder cancer surgery, and Southmead Hospital in Bristol, focusing on robotic prostate and bladder cancer procedures. His expertise encompasses both open and robotic surgical techniques, including the use of the Da Vinci robotic system for bladder cancer and complex reconstructive surgeries such as intra-corporeal urinary diversion. Before joining Guy’s and St Thomas’ in 2014, Mr. Thurairaja served as a consultant at Kent & Canterbury Hospital, where he established and led the robotic bladder cancer service for East Kent. He is also a pioneer in managing radiation cystitis, running the UK’s only dedicated Radiation Cystitis Clinic, which addresses complex urinary and pain symptoms resulting from pelvic cancer radiotherapy. Beyond clinical practice, he completed an MD thesis on prostate cancer at the University of London and has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles in international journals. Committed to education and mentorship, Mr. Thurairaja serves as a tutor at King’s College London GKT School of Medical Education and supervises the Royal College of Surgeons Bladder Cancer Fellowship. His clinical interests include bladder cancer surgery, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and the management of recurrent urinary tract infections and chronic pelvic pain. He is an active member of several professional bodies, including the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the British Association of Urological Surgeons, the European Board of Urology, and the European Robotic Urology Society.
