About Dr Vivienne Ezzat

Dr Vivienne Ezzat is a Consultant Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. Her expertise lies in the treatment of patients with arrhythmia and congenital heart disease, as well as electrophysiology, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators, electrocardiograms, catheter ablation, atrial fibrillation, and autonomic dysfunction. Dr Ezzat graduated in 1998 from the University of Sheffield and undertook her training in general medicine and cardiology in Leeds. She completed her PhD in 2007 from King’s College and trained in electrophysiology at the Heart Hospital and St Bartholomew’s Hospital. In 2014, she did a fellowship in adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) electrophysiology at the esteemed Toronto General Hospital in Canada, and upon her return to the UK, she was appointed consultant at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in 2015, where she is also the lead of the ACHD arrhythmia service at the Barts Heart Centre. Dr Ezzat is particularly interested in research involving the mechanisms and outcomes of ACHD, and is a trailblazer in the field of ACHD arrhythmia care. In 2018, she established the British Congenital Cardiac Electrophysiology Group (BiCCEP), an association of electrophysiologists, and organises its annual scientific meetings. In 2021, she founded a charity, The HeartBeat Foundation for Cardiac Disease, which is funding the development of a national ACHD arrhythmia database. She is the arrhythmia lead and a core founding member of a collaboration between the Uganda Heart Institute and Barts Heart Centre that started in 2022. She has served two terms on the British Heart Rhythm Society’s council and is currently Treasurer. Her approach to patient care is centred around empathy and all aspects of wellbeing, not just physical health, so that her patients can live life to the fullest. She is passionate about gender equality in cardiology and regularly mentors young women in the field.
