About Mr Ronald van Heerwaarden
Mr Ronald van Heerwaarden is an industry-leading consultant orthopaedic and specialist knee surgeon based in London. Renowned internationally for his expertise in limb deformity correction and joint-preserving surgery, since beginning his career in 2001, he has held several prestigious roles and made significant contributions to the advancement of osteotomy techniques. Mr van Heerwaarden is part of the Orthopaedic Innovation clinic in London. From 2001 to 2015, Mr van Heerwaarden served as head of the Limb Reconstruction Centre and Limb Deformity Reconstruction Units at the Sint Maartens Clinics in the Netherlands. In 2016, he founded the Centre for Deformity Correction and Joint Preserving Surgery at Kliniek ViaSana in Mill, the Netherlands. He also worked as a consultant for osteotomies at the International Knee and Joint Centre in Abu Dhabi between 2015 and 2023. Since 2019, he has been practising at the London Osteotomy Centre, where he continues to specialise in complex osteotomies and joint-preserving procedures. Throughout his career, Mr van Heerwaarden has been at the forefront of innovation in orthopaedics. As a member of the AO Knee Expert Group (2003–2014), he played a pivotal role in the development of advanced osteotomy techniques, instruments, and implants, including the widely used TomoFix plates. He remains actively involved in research and development, currently collaborating with Newclip Technics to create next-generation tools and implants for osteotomy surgery. In 2016, Mr van Heerwaarden was appointed the inaugural chairman of the ESSKA Osteotomy Committee and served as vice-chairman until 2019. He was also a key member of the ESSKA Osteotomy Consensus Project from 2021 to 2022. As a respected academic, Mr van Heerwaarden has co-edited numerous authoritative texts on osteotomies, including Osteotomies for Posttraumatic Deformities and Osteotomies Around the Knee. He has also published over 200 scientific articles on topics such as deformity analysis, osteotomy techniques, and joint-preserving surgery. Notably, he co-edited the January 2013 special issue of KSSTA on osteotomies around the knee. Mr van Heerwaarden is a sought-after speaker, having delivered lectures and organised courses on osteotomies and joint-preserving surgery in countries across the globe.
