Mr Michael Mokawem is a leading consultant spinal surgeon with an exceptionally busy complex spine surgery practice both in the NHS at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, an internationally recognised centre of excellence, and private sector at The Cleveland Clinic London, which has a unique focus on multidisciplinary patient care and strong clinical governance structure. He is a recognised leader in the field of robotic-guided spinal surgery, hosting national and international surgeons to develop their skills and chairing international robotic-guided spinal surgery meetings. He developed the endoscopic spine surgery centre of excellence at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, which is an extension of a continuing focus on minimally invasive approaches to surgery. His practice encompasses all aspects of spinal surgery, from the least invasive including keyhole surgery to large-scale deformity corrections. Private adult patients are seen at the Cleveland Clinic London while private children and adolescent patients are seen at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Private Care. He continually works towards making spinal surgery more accurate, and more precise, reducing blood loss through minimally invasive techniques, reducing collateral tissue trauma and ultimately striving to make spinal surgery more predictable with less risk but risk can never be completely eliminated from any surgery. He works collegiately with colleagues and often operates jointly with a consultant vascular surgeon for anterior approaches to the front of the spine. Areas of particular interest include scoliosis, spondylolisthesis, kyphosis, stenosis, disc protrusions with leg pain, spinal cord compression myelopathy and back pain.
