About Mr Maninder Bhogal

Mr Maninder Bhogal is a award-winning consultant ophthalmologist and researcher based in London, who specialises in cataracts, corneal transplantation and Fuchs' Dystrophy alongside ICL, keratoconus and aphakia. He privately practises for The London Clinic and St Thomas' Hospital for Guy's and St Thomas' Private Healthcare, while his NHS base is Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. Mr Bhogal, who performs over 500 cataract and refractive procedures each year, prides himself in his comprehensive assessments with clear explanations for patients and calm demeanour during surgery. He was awarded an MBBS in Medicine from the University of London in 2005. Following this achievement, he went on to complete basic and higher medical training, including further training at Moorfields' Eye Hospital and Singapore National Eye Centre, before going on to specialise in ophthalmology. He also has a PhD from University College London. In his training, he developed an interest in his top specialty, cataracts, which includes multifocal lens, LASIK and ICL surgery, as well as corneal disease and eye problems. Mr Bhogal utilises the high-level skills he was taught to provide bespoke and cutting-edge care for patients that require lens exchange/fixation surgery, iris repair and treatment for complications resulting from previous eye surgery and trauma. Further to his clinical and educational accomplishments, Mr Bhogal's research has led to the development of new methods and techniques in corneal transplantation, many of which have been widely adopted here in the UK and internationally. Mr Bhogal has been awarded various awards for his published research in ophthalmology. These include the Best Corneal Paper from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Alcon Glaucoma Studies Award and the United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons' (UKISCRS) video award, which he has won twice. Mr Bhogal's speciality reflects his globally-leading knowledge in Descemet's membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) corneal transplantation and he is on the scientific advisory board of the Endothelial Keratoplasty Learners Group (EKLG). He is also a keen trainer and runs the regional cataract training programme for South London. He uses his passion for technology and photography to produce educational training videos. He has created the possibility for all trainees to record surgery using smart phones and use this for reflective practise.
