About Dr Irene Chong

Dr Irene Chong is a highly accomplished Consultant Clinical Oncologist and the Head of Clinical Oncology at The Royal Marsden, where she holds both private and NHS clinics. She leads academic training for the NIHR/Biomedical Research Centre at both The Royal Marsden and the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). Dr Chong completed her medical training at St Bartholomew’s Medical College in London and went on to earn a PhD in Cancer Biology from the ICR. Her clinical expertise lies in treating cancers of the oesophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, and colon and rectum, with a focus on advanced radiotherapy techniques, including Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) and Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT). She is passionate about curing and managing patients with these conditions. Dr Chong is part of the Gastrointestinal Clinical Trials Unit at The Royal Marsden. Her research investigates novel therapeutic targets and biomarkers for gastrointestinal cancers through DNA sequencing and functional genomic approaches. She is also exploring the immune landscape of gastrointestinal malignancies to facilitate the design of preventative vaccination. She collaborates closely with The Royal Marsden’s Rectal Cancer Study Group and the Pelican Cancer Foundation, aiming to identify radiological and molecular markers that predict patient responses to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. During her PhD, Dr Chong received several prestigious awards, including the University of London Scholarship Award, the Fourth NIHR Infrastructure Experimental Medicine Research Award, and the Royal College of Radiologists' Kay Visiting Award.
