About Mr Christopher Young
Mr Christopher Young is a highly regarded and experienced cardiovascular surgeon who specialises in keyhole heart surgery, heart valve surgery, coronary artery surgery, and all forms of thoracic aneurysm surgery. Having performed over 10,000 cardiac operations, Mr Young is especially skilled in revision/redo cardiac surgery. Mr Young graduated from Sheffield University Medical School in 1980 and completed his cardiothoracic training at various esteemed hospitals in the UK, including St Bartholomew's Hospital, St Thomas Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children, and Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. Additionally, he conducted two years of research at the Rayne Institute, St Thomas' Hospital as a BHF junior research fellow, earning an MD for his work on myocardial protection. His specialised surgical expertise encompasses all facets of aortic valve surgery, aortic root replacement (including valve preserving techniques), and aortic aneurysm surgery. He specialises in surgery for aortopathies such as Marfan’s syndrome. Mr Young played a pioneering role in introducing TAVI (transcatheter aortic valve implantation) at London Bridge Hospital and he continues to be actively involved in the TAVI programme. Beyond his proficiency in aortic valve surgery, Mr Young is an expert in addressing thoracic aortic aneurysm disease, including aortic dissection, aortic arch replacement, descending and thoraco-abdominal aneurysm repair and hybrid vascular procedures. He pioneered and led the development of the thoracic aortic vascular programme at St Thomas' Hospital. The unit is now regarded as being at the forefront of thoracic aortic vascular disease nationally, undertaking around 150 cases/year.
