About Professor Anthony Mathur

Professor Anthony Mathur is a Consultant Cardiologist and Director for Cardiovascular Research in central London. He specialises in chest pain, heart attack, and heart failure, alongside stem cell therapy, artificial intelligence (AI) in cardiology, valvular heart disease, assessments and prevention, and coronary artery disease. He privately practises at Nuffield Health at St Bartholomew's Hospital, while his NHS base is Barts Heart Centre at Barts Health NHS Trust. Professor Mathur trained at the University of Cambridge and University College London before joining Barts Heart Centre. He also holds the position of Centre Lead for the Centre for Cardiovascular Medicine and Devices at Queen Mary University of London. His subspecialist expertise includes novel treatments for complex and ‘no-option’ cardiac patients, including the latest advances in device-based therapies, stem cell therapy, gene therapy and artificial intelligence in cardiology. As one of the UK’s foremost experts in interventional cardiology, Professor Mathur performs a high volume of complex angioplasty and percutaneous procedures, including transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). He leads a Compassionate Stem Cell Treatment Unit for patients with advanced cardiac disease and chairs the European Society of Cardiology Task Force on Stem Cells in Cardiovascular Disease. His research interests focus on developing cutting-edge therapies that combine regenerative medicine, biologics and digital innovation. He has led numerous international clinical trials exploring stem and gene therapies for cardiovascular disease and continues to pioneer translational research to improve outcomes for patients with heart failure and coronary disease. At Queen Mary University of London, Professor Mathur directs the Cardiovascular Devices Hub, a collaborative initiative that connects academia, industry and clinical specialists to develop and evaluate new cardiovascular technologies. His leadership has been instrumental in bringing first-in-human device trials and digital technologies, including AI-driven cardiac assessment tools, into clinical practice. Professor Mathur is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Physicians and the European Society of Cardiology. He is recognised internationally as a key opinion leader in interventional and regenerative cardiology, and is frequently invited to speak at major conferences worldwide.
