Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib)
Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) is a type of bacteria that can lead to severe infections. Infants and young children are particularly vulnerable and can be protected through vaccination. A Hib infection can result in serious illnesses such as meningitis and pneumonia. These conditions can make you quite unwell, often requiring hospital treatment. Even with effective care, there may be long-term consequences, including hearing impairment, seizures, amputations, and learning difficulties.
Common symptoms:
A high temperature
A headache
Blue, grey, pale or blotchy skin, lips or tongue – on brown or black skin, this may be easier to see on the palms of the hands or soles of the feet
Being sleepier than normal or difficult to wake
A sore throat
Difficulty breathing – babies may make grunting noises
A rash that looks like small bruises or bleeding under the skin and does not disappear when you press a glass against it
Swollen or painful joints
