About Mr Walid Elmahdy
Mr Walid Elmahdy is a distinguished Consultant Cardiac and Aortic surgeon based at Leeds Teaching Hospital. He specialises in complex aortic surgery addressing the aortic root and aortic arch including hybrid procedures. His areas of expertise include aortic valve surgery, mitral valve surgery, minimal invasive cardiac surgery, coronary artery bypass grafts including beating heart, arterial revascularisation and endoscopic conduit harvesting. His expertise extends to surgery for infected heart valves, complex re-operative cardiac surgery, and surgery for cardiac tumours. In addition, Mr Elmahdy has a special interest in prosthesis-patient mismatch preventive surgery, put simply, avoiding the implantation of a small valve for the patient body size, and providing a lifetime valve strategy. This is supported by his expertise in aortic root enlargement surgery and use of new generation sutureless valves. Mr Elmahdy qualified in 2002 from Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt. He obtained a Master’s degree in 2007 and became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons the same year. He worked at the National Heart Institute in Egypt until 2010 when he moved to the UK, working at several institutions including Wolverhampton New Cross Hospital, Leeds Yorkshire Heart Centre, London Royal Brompton Hospital, Cambridge Royal Papworth Hospital, and Oxford John Radcliffe Hospital. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Cardiothoracic Surgeons, and holds a PhD, awarded in 2015, from Ain Shams University in Cardiothoracic surgery. Mr Elmahdy, is a senior lecturer at Leeds University, and is the clinical supervisor for the Leeds Aortic Fellowship. He is a member of several esteemed societies from both the UK and Egypt. In addition to his surgical practice, Mr Elmahdy is a semi-professional artist with national and international painting exhibitions.
