About Dr Sean Preston
Dr Sean Preston is the medical director and director of endoscopy at The Princess Grace Hospital and chair of the Digestive Diseases and Renal Department for HCA Healthcare UK. Graduating from St Mary’s Hospital Medical School, Paddington in 1995, Dr Preston completed the majority of his postgraduate training at Barts and The London NHS Trust, one of the UK’s leading teaching hospitals. He further honed his expertise with an Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship in Sydney before being appointed consultant at Barts in 2006, where he continues to practise. Dr Preston specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions, including gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (heartburn), Barrett’s oesophagus, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, diarrhoea, constipation, bloating, and complex diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy of the oesophagus, stomach, and colon. With a strong interest in gut health and the role of the microbiota, he integrates diet, prebiotics, and probiotics into his approach to maintaining optimal digestive health. His consultations are structured to provide patients with ample time to discuss their symptoms and fully understand their condition. His PhD at Cancer Research UK, London, focused on stem cells in gastrointestinal cancers, contributing to several landmark publications in the field. Dr Preston served as director of endoscopy at Barts Health from 2008 to 2024 and is currently deputy director of the North East London NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. His endoscopic expertise spans gastroscopy, colonoscopy, and endoscopic ultrasound, and he is an accredited colonoscopist for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, having met its rigorous accreditation standards and performance audits. His research continues to focus on Barrett’s oesophagus and gastrointestinal cancer, with numerous key publications and book chapters to his name. Recognised for his contributions to gastroenterology, Dr Preston was featured in the 2013 Tatler Doctors Guide of Britain’s Top 250 Consultants and is listed in the 2024 Spears 500 Top Recommended UK Private Doctors and Surgeons. He has also served as president of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Section of the Royal Society of Medicine (2015-2017) and chairman of the Specialists’ Committee for the Independent Doctors’ Federation. As a founding partner of London Digestive Health, based at the London Digestive Centre, Dr Preston works alongside a multidisciplinary team of leading gastroenterologists, GI surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, and dietitians, providing comprehensive, first-class digestive care.
