About Professor David Rawat
Professor David Rawat is a distinguished paediatric gastroenterologist in London, who specialises in constipation, gastroesophageal reflux disease and coeliac disease, alongside inflammatory bowel disease, abdominal pain, feeding difficulties, food allergies and growth and weight. He has over 20 years of experience as a consultant, serving both in the NHS and the private sector. Currently, he privately practises at The Cromwell Hospital and New Victoria Hospital, while his NHS base is Barts Healthcare Trust. Here, he's departmental lead for paediatric neuro-gastromotility disorders and endoscopy at The Royal London Hospital. Professor Rawat possesses extensive experience in managing acute and chronic paediatric gastrointestinal (GI) disorders. He has developed a particular expertise in GI motility disorders, which was further enhanced through a clinical fellowship in neurogastromotility at Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard University, USA. In addition to GI motility disorders, his specialist interests include gastrointestinal allergies, feeding disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, and therapeutic endoscopy. Professor Rawat began his medical journey at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) in Dublin, graduating in 1993. He then completed his post-graduate paediatric training in Cambridge, UK, and went on to attain subspecialist qualifications in London. In September 2004, he obtained his Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in paediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition. Throughout his career, Professor Rawat has held consultant positions at two of London’s most prominent NHS tertiary teaching hospitals. From 2005 to 2011, he served at The Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, where he also held an honorary contract as GI Lead with The Royal Brompton Hospital. He then continued his work at The Royal London Hospital from 2011 until 2017. Expanding his international experience, Professor Rawat worked in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, from 2018 until December 2022 at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, the largest children's tertiary teaching hospital in Abu Dhabi, in the Department of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition. In January 2023, Professor Rawat returned to London and was reappointed to his NHS consultant post at The Royal London Hospital, where he led the paediatric GI motility services. In December 2024, he started consulting privately full-time in London where he continues to provide evidence-based care to improve paediatric digestive health. Simultaneously, he works with the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust to perform diagnostic testing and endoscopies for children under the NHS. His academic career is well established, with numerous research publications in peer-reviewed journals. He was also awarded a clinical professorship at Khalifa University, College of Medicine and Health Sciences in the UAE. His commitment to medical education is evident in his ongoing efforts to lecture and mentor undergraduate and postgraduate junior doctors, both in the UK and abroad.
