About Mr Adam Stearns

Mr Adam Stearns is a consultant general and colorectal surgeon based at Spire Norwich Hospital. He specialises in treating haemorrhoids, anal fistulas, bowel function disorders, colorectal cancer, pilonidal sinus problems, hernias, appendix problems and appendicitis, and stoma complications, and is additionally adept at performing colonoscopies, hernia surgery, and stoma surgeries. Mr Stearns qualified in 2002 from Oxford University, and initially trained in Oxford and Glasgow. After undertaking a three-year research fellowship at Harvard Medical School, for which he was awarded a DPhil from Oxford, he pursued higher surgical training in the East of England. Upon entering the specialist register, he did further specialist fellowships in advanced laparoscopic colorectal surgical techniques at St Mark’s Hospital in London and peritoneal malignancy, including cytoreductive surgery and heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy, at the Colorectal Peritoneal Oncology Centre at The Christie in Manchester. Appointed consultant at Norfolk & Norwich University Hospitals in 2016, Mr Stearns has since introduced surgery for colorectal peritoneal metastases, establishing the only unit in the East of England that can offer cytoreductive surgery and heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). He has held roles including: chair for colorectal cancer multidisciplinary team; lead for the lower gastrointestinal two week wait pathway; service director for general, breast and thoracic surgery; and specialty lead for surgery for Clinical Research Network East of England. His research interests include patients’ quality of life after colorectal surgery and advanced colonic cancer surgery. His research has been presented at national and international conferences. Additionally, Mr Stearns is committed to surgical training and has been faculty on numerous UK and international courses, including a European course on advanced colonic cancer surgery (complete mesocolic excision), a specialist technique only performed in very few centres in the UK.
