Schistosomiasis (bilharzia)
Schistosomiasis, often referred to as bilharzia, is an infection caused by small worms that inhabit ponds, lakes, and rivers. While it is not present in the UK, there is a risk of infection in certain regions around the world. These tiny worms thrive in untreated freshwater sources such as rivers, lakes, and ponds. Although they are invisible to the naked eye, they can be present in water that appears clean. If you come into contact with contaminated water—such as while swimming, washing, or wading—you could risk the worms penetrating your skin and entering your body.
Common symptoms:
A cough
Feeling tired
An itchy, bumpy rash or prickly, stinging feeling on skin that was in the water ("swimmer's itch")
A high temperature (fever)
Headaches, tummy ache, muscle aches and joint pain
Diarrhoea – this may have blood in it
Blood in your pee
Blisters, sores or bleeding from your vagina, or pain when having sex
