Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA)
Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) is a rare condition characterised by inflammation of the blood vessels, primarily affecting the ears, nose, sinuses, kidneys, and lungs. If left untreated, it can lead to serious complications, but medication is available to help alleviate symptoms. This condition was formerly known as Wegener's granulomatosis. GPA falls under the category of vasculitis, which refers to the inflammation of blood vessels. The symptoms can differ significantly from person to person and may range from mild to severe. In some individuals, symptoms develop gradually over several months, while in others, they may manifest abruptly.
