Angioedema
Angioedema is a condition characterized by swelling in the deeper layers of the skin, often affecting areas such as the face, lips, throat, and sometimes the hands and feet. Symptoms typically include sudden swelling, which may be accompanied by pain or a burning sensation. In some cases, it can also lead to difficulty breathing if the throat swells significantly.
This condition can occur due to various reasons, including allergic reactions to foods, medications, or insect stings, as well as non-allergic factors like stress or certain medical conditions. Inherited angioedema, which is less common, is linked to genetic factors that affect the body’s ability to regulate swelling.
Treatment options depend on the underlying cause and severity of the symptoms. For mild cases, antihistamines may be effective in reducing symptoms, while more serious cases may require corticosteroids or other medications. In emergency situations, particularly when breathing is compromised, immediate medical attention is essential.
