Anal fissure
Anal fissures are small tears in the lining of the anus that can cause discomfort and pain. Common symptoms include sharp pain during bowel movements, bleeding from the anus, and itching or irritation in the affected area.
Several factors can contribute to the development of anal fissures. These include passing hard or large stools, chronic constipation or diarrhoea, and straining during bowel movements. Other causes may involve anal intercourse or conditions that affect the anal region, such as inflammatory bowel disease.
Treatment for anal fissures typically focuses on relieving pain and promoting healing. This may involve dietary changes to increase fibre intake and ensure softer stools, as well as drinking plenty of fluids. Over-the-counter pain relief and topical ointments can help manage discomfort. In more severe cases, a healthcare professional may recommend prescription medications or, in rare instances, surgical options to repair the fissure.
