Acute myeloid leukaemia
Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is a fast-growing cancer that affects the myeloid cells, which are crucial for producing blood cells in the body. This condition can lead to a range of symptoms, including fatigue, frequent infections, easy bruising or bleeding, and unexplained weight loss. The exact causes of AML are not fully understood, but certain risk factors, such as previous chemotherapy, exposure to radiation, and certain genetic disorders, may increase the likelihood of developing the disease.
Diagnosing AML typically involves blood tests to check for abnormal blood cell counts, as well as a bone marrow biopsy to confirm the presence of leukaemic cells. Treatment options for AML often include chemotherapy to target and destroy the cancer cells, and in some cases, a stem cell transplant may be recommended to help restore healthy blood cell production. It’s essential for patients to discuss their individual treatment plans with their healthcare team to determine the best approach for their specific situation.
