About Professor Shaun Preston

Professor Shaun Preston is a highly experienced consultant general and upper GI robotic surgeon based in Guildford and London, with a focus on oesophago-gastric surgery. He sees patients at Nuffield Health Guildford Hospital, Cromwell Hospital, HCA at The Shard, and London Bridge Hospital. His main areas of expertise include oesophageal and gastric cancer surgery, robotic and laparoscopic procedures, acid reflux, hiatal hernias, and endoscopy. He regularly treats conditions such as achalasia, Barrett’s oesophagus, gallstones, and hernias, using a patient-centred approach and minimally invasive techniques where appropriate. Professor Preston has trained extensively in the UK and internationally. He completed his medical and surgical degrees at the University of Leeds, where he also earned a Doctorate in gastrointestinal cancer. He went on to train in high-volume oesophago-gastric units, including the Northern Oesophago-Gastric Unit in Newcastle and the National Cancer Center Hospital in Tokyo. He further developed his skills in minimally invasive oesophagectomy at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. In 2000, he was awarded the ASGBI Gold Medal for the highest performance in the UK’s Intercollegiate Fellowship in General Surgery. He is Honorary Professor of Oesophago-Gastric & Robotic Surgery at the University of Surrey, and Director of the Oesophago-Gastric Cancer Unit at The Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust Hospital, a unit he established and has led since 2006. The unit serves the Surrey and Sussex Cancer Alliance population of over 4 million people, and is the UK’s leading robotic oesophago-gastric unit, with world class outcomes. He is also the Upper GI MDT Lead at The Cromwell Hospital, London. Alongside his clinical work, Professor Preston is active in research and teaching. He has led and contributed to major national studies in oesophageal and gastric cancer, including as National Chief Investigator for the NeoAEGIS trial, and Principal Investigator for the ST03 trial and OCCAMS Project. Professor Preston has also served on the council of the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons (AUGIS) and the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ALSGBI), reflecting his ongoing commitment to high standards in surgical care and education. He lectures internationally on all aspects of oesophago-gastric surgery, often demonstrating surgical techniques at conferences, is widely published, and invited to sit on the panels of international consensus meetings.
