About Professor Sami Hoque
Professor (Dr) Hoque is an internationally recognised consultant gastroenterologist and advanced endoscopist practising privately at Nuffield Health The Holly Hospital and at Spire London East Hospital, with an outstanding career spanning clinical practice, research, innovation and medical education. He is currently a Professor and consultant gastroenterologist and director of endoscopy at Barts Health NHS Trust, based at Whipps Cross University Hospital in London, where he also leads the development of advanced digestive disease services. He previously held the post of Honorary Reader at the Blizard Institute, Queen Mary University of London, and continues to maintain close academic and research links with the university. Professor (Dr) Hoque has more than three decades of experience in gastroenterology, supported by a distinguished academic background. He completed his medical degree (MBBS), followed by postgraduate training in the UK, including an MMedSci at the University of Birmingham and a PhD at the University of Edinburgh. His doctoral research in gut mucosal immunology was funded by the World Bank and UK research councils and was internationally acclaimed for its contribution to understanding how immune responses in the gut influence inflammatory bowel disease and other gastrointestinal conditions. He also holds a diploma in clinical education from the University of Leeds, reflecting his long-standing commitment to teaching and training. Clinically, Professor (Dr) Hoque specialises in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), IBS, gastrointestinal cancer, advanced endoscopy and complex digestive disorders. As Director of Endoscopy at Whipps Cross, he has led the introduction of innovative technologies including AI-assisted endoscopy and has been the project lead for the development of the new Digestive Disease Centre. He has also established NHS-funded services for colorectal capsule endoscopy and oesophageal cancer screening using Cytosponge, helping to improve early detection and patient outcomes. Dr Hoque is a leading figure in clinical research and drug development in gastroenterology. He has led numerous NIHR portfolio studies with consistently high recruitment rates and has played a key role in the development of new biological therapies for IBD, He has authored NICE technology appraisals for IBD treatments and serves as an Editor for Cochrane Gut. His academic output includes over 230 peer-reviewed publications, with an H-index of 24, and more than 1,960 citations since 2019 alone. His work has been published in leading journals including The Lancet and the New England Journal of Medicine. His research career began with groundbreaking studies in mucosal immunology, including influential work on the vertical transfer of immunity from mother to child, cited widely in the scientific literature. He has also made major contributions to the understanding and management of diarrhoeal disease, cholera and malnutrition in developing countries, helping to shape global public health practice. Professor (Dr) Hoque’s achievements have been recognised with multiple national and international awards, including repeated Consultant Clinical Excellence Awards, Barts Health Heroes awards, and the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh’s ‘Inspiring Physician’ award. He has also received prestigious scholarships and research prizes, including the Best Scientific Presentation Award at the American College of Gastroenterology. Alongside his clinical and research roles, Professor (Dr) Hoque is a dedicated educator and mentor. He has held senior academic appointments at Queen Mary University of London and has supervised many PhD and MD students, many of whom have gone on to successful academic and clinical careers. He is known for his supportive, patient-centred approach and his commitment to ensuring that every patient receives care that is both scientifically advanced and deeply compassionate.
