About Mr Rhys Thomas
Mr Rhys Thomas is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising in foot and ankle surgery. He specialises in ankle, ankle replacement therapy and osteoarthritis of the ankle, alongside , bunions (hallux valgus), and diabetic foot. He also performs ankle replacement surgery and provides treatment for sports-related injuries. He privately practises at Nuffield Health Vale Hospital, while his NHS base is Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust. Mr Thomas graduated from University College Hospital, London in 1990 and went on to complete specialist training in adult foot and ankle surgery during a BOA/Wishbone Trust Travelling Fellowship in Toronto. He further enhanced his expertise through fellowships awarded by both the European and American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Societies. In 2003, he was appointed as a consultant in Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, where he also established and supervises the Cardiff Foot and Ankle Fellowship. Recognised for his work in sport and exercise medicine, Mr Thomas is a Fellow of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine (FFSEM) and has served as Honorary Surgeon to both the Welsh Rugby Union and Football Association of Wales. He was the orthopaedic surgeon for the Welsh national teams at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and works with athletes across professional football, rugby and cricket. Mr Thomas previously served on the Education Committee of the British Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society for seven years and is committed to surgical training and education.
