About Mr Mario Saldanha

Mr Mario Saldanha is a highly respected and accomplished consultant ophthalmologist based in Swansea and Bridgend, where he is also a director of Sana Private Health. He specialises in corneal, cataract and refractive surgery, with particular expertise in corneal transplant surgery (including DMEK and lamellar keratoplasty), keratoconus management with corneal cross-linking, and advanced cataract surgery using premium intraocular lenses. He also offers refractive lens exchange and bespoke vision correction procedures, providing patient-centred care tailored to individual visual needs. Mr Saldanha has over 20 years’ experience in ophthalmology, having trained and worked in several leading ophthalmic centres in the UK and internationally. He completed a prestigious fellowship in Corneal and Refractive Surgery at the University of Toronto, where he gained advanced training in pioneering, minimally invasive corneal transplantation techniques. He is the only corneal sub-specialist serving the Swansea Bay and Hywel Dda Health Boards, as well as the only surgeon in Wales to offer accelerated corneal cross-linking for keratoconus. Alongside his clinical work, Mr Saldanha is deeply committed to education, research and professional leadership. He holds an Honorary Senior Lecturer post at Cardiff University, and is a regular invited faculty member at international meetings, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. He has published widely in peer-reviewed journals, contributed to academic textbooks, and is an active member of several professional bodies, including the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and UKISCRS, reflecting his ongoing contribution to advancing the field of ophthalmology.
