About Professor Iqbal Shergill

Professor Iqbal Shergill is an experienced consultant urologist based in Wrexham, North Wales, and Chester, Cheshire. He welcomes patients for both general urological care and specialist consultations. His expertise includes modern prostate cancer diagnostics (using Multi-parametric MRI and Transperineal Template Mapping Biopsies), laser treatment of kidney stones, and minimally invasive procedures for benign prostate conditions such as Urolift, Rezum, and HOLEP. He manages all aspects of urological health. Professor Shergill graduated from Charing Cross & Westminster Medical School in 1997. During his medical studies, he completed a year of full-time research, earning a First-Class Honours BSc from the University of London. His research was showcased at both national and international conferences. He was awarded the prestigious Medical Research Council (PROFC) Intercalated Course Award and a Nuffield Foundation Undergraduate Research Bursary. He completed his basic surgical training in Oxford between 1998 and 2000, working at renowned institutions such as the Radcliffe Infirmary, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, and John Radcliffe Hospital. From 2002 to 2004, Professor Shergill conducted full-time research for his MD thesis at the Institute of Urology, University of London. His work focused on predictive and prognostic markers in men undergoing radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer. This project required multidisciplinary collaboration with urologists, pathologists, and scientists—an approach he continues to champion. Beginning in 2004, he undertook higher surgical training in urology on the North Thames Deanery Rotation. He trained at high-volume specialist centres, gaining hands-on experience in contemporary treatments for urinary stone disease, laser prostatectomy, complex uro-oncology, and laparoscopic and minimally invasive urological surgery. He achieved FRCS (Urol) in 2008 and completed his training in 2010. He subsequently passed the European FEBU examination in 2013. Since becoming a Consultant, Professor Shergill has led numerous innovations in urological care across North Wales and Cheshire, including the adoption of NICE-approved therapies. He was the first in NHS Wales to perform day-case prostate procedures such as Urolift and Rezum, and currently serves as a national mentor for HOLEP laser surgery. His reputation brings referrals from across Wales and North West England. Professor Shergill has authored 94 peer-reviewed papers, edited six medical textbooks, and written 12 book chapters. He frequently presents at national and international conferences. As clinical director of the North Wales Clinical Research Centre, he leads an active research programme and serves as principal investigator for several multi-centre UK trials. He supervises three PhD candidates, three Academic Foundation Year doctors, and three Master’s students, and has introduced new Master's-level research degrees. He regularly organises national and international urology training courses and holds Honorary Senior Lecturer positions at multiple universities. He teaches both medical and nursing students and supervises Advanced Nurse Practitioners in performing urological procedures. His outstanding contributions have been recognised with a UK National Clinical Excellence Bronze Award.
