About Dr Ian McCafferty

Dr Ian McCafferty is a leading consultant diagnostic and interventional radiologist based in Birmingham. He is part of The Radiology Clinic. In diagnostic radiology, Dr McCafferty's areas of expertise include ultrasound, CT, and MRI, with a special interest in CT colonography, MR enterography for colorectal cancer diagnosis, and multiparametric MRI for prostate cancer detection. In interventional radiology, Dr McCafferty's expertise includes vascular access, tumour ablation, vascular malformations, paediatric interventions, and vascular embolisation. Dr McCafferty qualified from University College London and Middlesex Hospital, with an intercalated BSc in Immunology (1986) and an MBBS (1989). He worked in Australia before completing a medical rotation in Bournemouth and Poole Hospitals. Dr McCafferty undertook five additional years of radiology training within the prestigious West Midlands Deanery, receiving fellowship to the Royal College of Radiologists in 1996. In addition, Dr McCafferty went on to complete an interventional fellowship in urogenital and vascular interventional radiology (image-guided surgery) at John Radcliffe and Churchill Hospitals in Oxford. He took up a consultant post at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham in 1999, where he also served as interventional radiology lead and the director of the quality and outcomes research unit. During that time, he provided 1 day a week of interventional radiology support to the Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital. After 24 years at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham in 2022, Dr McCafferty was headhunted to Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital to provide paediatric interventional services. He is currently the clinical lead of the interventional radiology services As a passionate educator, Dr McCafferty has also held roles, including as deputy head of the West Midlands Radiology Scheme and the chair of the BSIR Educational and Scientific Program Committees. He is the co-founder of the Interventional Oncology UK and British Society of Urogenital Radiology and has developed the Vascular Anomalies Special Interest Group with Professor Joe Brookes from the Royal Free Hospital. Dr McCafferty has held several positions in the British Society of Interventional Radiology (BSIR), becoming President from 2019 to 2021. In 2024, he became the 24th recipient of the BSIR prestigious gold medal in recognition of his service to interventional radiology. Dr McCafferty has also held leadership roles within the British Society of Interventional Radiology (BSIR), serving as secretary, vice president, and president-elect.
