About Dr Gabriella Captur
Dr Gaby Captur is a leading consultant cardiologist at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust and Associate Professor at University College London (UCL), where she specialises in inherited heart conditions and advanced cardiac imaging. At the Royal Free Hospital, she is the Service Lead for its Inherited Cardiac Conditions Service, caring for individuals with genetic and acquired heart muscle conditions such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, dilated cardiomyopathy, lamin heart disease, etc. Academically, she heads the Cardiometabolic Research Department at UCL’s Lifelong Health and Ageing Unit, focusing on heart health in older adults and population studies. She also consults privately at 88 Harley Street, 9 Harley Street, and the Royal Free London Private Patients Unit. Dr Captur is internationally acknowledged for her expertise in cardiomyopathies, genetic heart disorders, heart failure, and cardiovascular disease prevention. With over 18 years’ experience, she provides personalised, evidence-based cardiology care and is known for her thorough and compassionate patient management. She trained in cardiology and multi-modality imaging at leading London centres, including the Heart Hospital and Barts Heart Centre. She completed a cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) research fellowship at the US National Institutes of Health and Brigham Women’s Hospital in Boston. She holds expert accreditation in CMR, echocardiography (including adult congenital and transoesophageal echo), and cardiac CT. Dr Captur earned her PhD at UCL, holds an MSc in Cardiology with Distinction, and is a Fellow of both the European Society of Cardiology and the Royal College of Physicians. As a pioneering clinical researcher, Dr Captur has authored over 135 peer-reviewed publications. She leads a research team at UCL and has received more than 30 national and international awards and grants, including prestigious fellowships from the NIHR, EACVI and BHF, along with honours from the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, and Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance. She developed widely used CMR calibration tools and holds a patent for an electrocardiographic imaging vest designed to improve risk assessment for sudden cardiac death. In her role as UK National Taskforce Lead for Cardiomyopathy (BSCMR), Dr Captur is at the forefront of innovation in cardiac care. She frequently speaks at international conferences and actively participates in key professional bodies including the ESC, AHA, SCMR, BSCMR, and the Royal College of Physicians. Her clinical research has gained broad media coverage, featuring on EuroNEWS, BBC Morning Live, BBC Science, The Daily Mail, Evening Standard, The Guardian, and other national platforms.
