About Professor Dale Vimalachandran
Professor Dale Vimalachandran is a consultant in general and colorectal surgery based in Chester, with expertise in the management of colorectal cancer, colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy, alongside diverticular disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), haemorrhoids, anal fissures and abdominal wall hernia. He trained in Liverpool and the Northwest since 1992 and undertook specialist fellowships in South Africa and the prestigious Cleveland Clinic in the USA. He privately practises at Nuffield Health Chester, Grosvenor Hospital, while his NHS base is the Countess of Chester NHS Foundation Trust. He is also a Reader/Associate Professor at the University of Liverpool where he runs a large colorectal surgery research programme. His clinical interests span a wide range of colorectal and general surgical conditions, including haemorrhoids, abscesses, inguinal and abdominal wall hernia repair, pelvic floor surgery, colorectal surgery (lower GI), incontinence (faeces), hernia surgery and anal fistula treatment. Professor Vimalachandran has been a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England since 2009 and holds a medical doctorate from the University of Liverpool, awarded in 2006. His commitment to surgical education is reflected in his PGCE in medical education from the University of Chester and his recent recognition as a fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2024. He plays an active role in training and mentoring junior surgeons and has supervised over 13 PhD projects and published over 125 scientific papers on general and colorectal surgery. Professor Vimalachandran has held several national leadership roles in surgical research. He is currently the deputy chair of the scientific committee at Bowel Research UK and was previously the national specialty lead for cancer surgery with the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). He has also contributed to national guideline development as a member of the colorectal subgroup of the National Cancer Research Institute and the Research and Audit Committee of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland. He is also the Deputy Chair of the clinical ethics committee at the Countess of Chester and was previously the Associate Medical Director for planned care. Professor Vimalachandran is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the British Association of Surgical Oncology, the Association of Surgeons and the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland.
