About Dr Chitrabhanu Ballav

Dr Chitrabhanu Ballav is a leading consultant endocrinologist based in Great Missenden, who specialises in thyroid, reproductive endocrinology and diabetes alongside adrenal disorders, pituitary conditions and antenatal endocrinology. He privately practises at The Chiltern Hospital - part of the Circle Health Group - while his NHS base is Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust where he is the clinical lead for endocrinology. Here, he runs clinics for Type 1 and complex Type 2 diabetes, antenatal clinic for pre-existing diabetes or pregnancy-induced diabetes and general endocrinology. Dr Ballav has been awarded an FRCP (London), MRCP (Diabetes and Endocrine) and an MBBS from the University of Calcutta where he won several gold medals and honours. He then went on to complete his training in medicine at several centres of excellence in Cambridge, Glasgow and Kent, as well as Leeds. He trained in endocrinology and diabetes in Oxford. He undertook several prestigious fellowships including the Transplant fellowship at the University of Oxford, Novo Nordisk research foundation fellowship and the Rising Star Award from Sanofi-Aventis, alongside the Donell-Etzweiler International Research scholarship at the International Diabetes Centre in Minnesota, US. Dr Ballav's clinical interests also lie in calcium bone metabolism and his interests in diabetes include cardio-metabolic risk management and technology. He has published several papers on these topics, and presented at several national and international meetings including the American Diabetes Association Scientific sessions, European Association for Study of Diabetes Annual meetings, and Society for Endocrinology annual meetings. Furthermore, Dr Ballav has co-authored the chapter on Diabetes and Endocrinology in Medicine for MRCP (ed. Bessant, Birns and Ford, Oxford University Press). Dr Ballav is also a respected name in clinical education. He has been a Royal College tutor and lecturer for the MRCP clinical course in London for more than a decade. He has also lectured for undergraduates from Oxford University, the University of Buckingham and on the MSc Diabetes course at the University of Leicester. Currently, he's the training programme director for internal medicine at Thames Valley (previously Oxford Deanery) and a member of the Speciality Advisory Committee of the Royal College of Physicians. He has been an education supervisor for trainees in general medicine and higher speciality trainees in diabetes and endocrinology. He is a member of various professional organisations including the Society for Endocrinology, Association of British Clinical Diabetologists and Diabetes UK, alongside the Royal College of Physicians (London).
