About Mr Balasubramanian Ramasamy
Mr Balasubramanian Ramasamy is a leading consultant ophthalmologist based in Wirral who specialises in retinal, vitreoretinal and cataract surgery for the treatment of cataracts, glaucoma and retinal diseases, including macular degeneration, macular hole, epiretinal membrane and retinal vein occlusion. With over 21 years’ experience in ophthalmology, Mr Ramasamy is also an expert in the provision of premium lenses. He consults privately at Spire Murrayfield Hospital Wirral. Mr Ramasamy originally qualified from Dr MGR Medical University, where he obtained both his MBBS (1997) and his MS in Surgery in Ophthalmology (2002). After relocating to the UK, he completed his ophthalmology residency at Royal Liverpool University Hospital before going on to accomplish two prestigious fellowships: a vitreoretinal fellowship at Wirral University Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and an intensive clinical fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at The University of Auckland, New Zealand. Currently, Mr Ramasamy is the clinical lead for the macular degeneration service at Arrowe Park Hospital, where he holds an NHS consultant post since 2014. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and a member of various professional ophthalmology organisations, including the British and Eire Association of Vitreoretinal Surgeons. Further to his ophthalmic practice, Mr Ramasamy is closely involved in clinical research, with the aim of continuing to deliver evidence-based treatments to all of his patients. To date, he has authored more than 23 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals. He is also a GMC-recognised trainer and, at present, is involved in the provision of clinical supervision to registrars in training, optometrists, and nurses.
