About Mr Tony Bateman

Mr Tony Bateman is a distinguished consultant spine surgeon based in Derby. His areas of expertise include back pain, spinal injections, degenerative lumbar and cervical disc disease, cervical spine disorders, neck pain, and spine disorders related to sports. In addition to lumbar spine surgery, he is highly proficient in cervical foraminotomy and cervical discectomy, and also provides non-operative spine care and osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture management. Mr Bateman, who is the director of Integrity Spine Care, consults privately at Nuffield Health Derby Hospital. With over 21 years’ experience, he practised as a substantive consultant at Royal Derby Spinal Centre between 2017 and 2024 and remains affiliated as an honorary consultant. He is the professional practice representative for the British Association of Spine Surgeons. Mr Bateman serves as an executive committee member of the Society for Back Pain Research and was previously the Regional Specialty Professional Advisor for the East Midlands for the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Notably, he has also provided medical support during major sport events, including the World Rowing Championships, the London 2012 Olympic Games, and multiple national and international motorsport events such as Formula 1. Mr Bateman qualified from Imperial College London with an MBBS and an intercalated BSc in Surgery and Anaesthesia. He then trained at various London hospitals, before completing higher specialist training on the prestigious South East Thames rotation. Mr Bateman, who also holds a Diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine, undertook spine surgery fellowships at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre through the University of Toronto and Frimley Park Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. In addition to his clinical practice, Mr Bateman is an honorary professor at Nottingham Trent University. He has also been a local principal investigator for several clinical trials, including POLYFIX-DCM, and his research contributions have been presented at conferences and published in reputed medical journals.
