Actinomycosis
Actinomycosis is an uncommon bacterial infection that can be quite severe, though it is generally treatable with antibiotics. The bacteria responsible for this condition typically reside harmlessly within the body and only trigger an infection when they penetrate the lining of areas like the mouth or intestines. This infection is not contagious, meaning it cannot be passed on to others. While it can affect any part of the body, the most frequently impacted areas are the head and neck, chest, abdomen, and pelvis.
